This exhibition relies on a new perspective on the behavior of living matter through the study of an artificial nanostructure in contemporary art, the liposome. Liposomes artificially resemble cells’ membrane structure.  The project based artistic research I conducted as a PhD student reshapes an existing worldview on the lyotropism phenomenon of liquid crystals and the self-assembly of the microcosm, that perceives through the change in color and form.

I contacted the research team of the pharmaceutical nanotechnology laboratory and recorded the audiovisual material of our discussion. 6 still images of the films that emerged speak about complexity and its social valuation, the connection between human behavior and the biophysical functions of matter, the reflection on the prevailing technocratic perspective, and the anxiety about the changing concept of memory in the Anthropocene era.

In the first film (05.08 sec) I digitally recorded the chemical composition of the artificial biomaterial, the liposome, in the nanotechnology lab of the national university of Athens. Through its construction the concepts of irreversibility and randomness, systems far from equilibrium and the way they are linked to the spontaneous phenomenon of life were explored.

In the second film (32.44 sec) performing science issues raised, based on thermotropic crystals change of matter’s organization as a function of temperature. Light diffracted differently, yielding unexpected results. I synthesized thermotropic liquid crystals of cholesteryl derivatives, based on protocol. I repeated the experiment, through a visual installation, in different parts of the public sphere, filming the process of change. In the urban landscape of Athens, apartment buildings diffuse light in a different way than natural ecotopes. Field of Ares is on of the largest state-owned public parks in Athens, Greece. Located about 1 km NE from Omonoia Square, covering an area of 27.7 hectares. Mount Parnitha is a densely forested mountain range north of Athens with an elevation of 1,413 m (4,636 ft).   Hydra Island is one of the Saronic Islands of Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, has a strong maritime culture and crystal blue seawater. Although the island’s name after Ancient Greek springs, today it’s almost dry, mostly consists of rocky hillsides and pine forested valleys. The visual installation of the liquid crystals in the natural light of the public sphere is an artistic experiment, which functions as a relational practice of connecting the phenomenon of lyotropism to society. Soundscapes of filming processes reflects on public activities of each part.
